Greetings from Parigi,
In the one week since my last writing, the world has watched as the UK voted in a reformed Labour Party over the populist right after fourteen years of destructive, conservative governments. Even more important to my daily life, France defied all polls and media fear-mongering with a “surprise” rejection of the far-right Rassemblement National in their recent legislative elections.
I put quotation marks around the word surprise because, historically, the French have successfully stood against the far-right ever since Hitler’s Wehrmacht. While all projections showed an almost guaranteed win for the RN, the people once again came together to defend the republic. Vive la France!
It is an unexpectedly hopeful time.
As an American abroad, that might sound ludicrous when our own presidential election is a mere four months away and the two candidates put on such mournful display the state of our union. But what I mean is this: I find hope in the opportunity that has been presented to us after the entire world witnessed President Biden’s blatant mental decline and inability to serve—opening up the necessary conversation we must have as a country about replacing him as the Democratic candidate.
For the many millions of us who are clear about the fact that a second Trump presidency would likely bring about the end of liberal democracy as we have enjoyed it for the past century, this is a golden opportunity to propose a new opposition to the most dangerous president in our country’s history.
With love,
Ryan
“Last Words” lyrics
I’m thinking of my last words
I don’t have a lot to say
I’ve been bending over backwards
Hoping for the light of day
As I get closer
To your place
I think it over
And walk away
Think I need to be distracted
Running out of gas today
And I could be a bastard
Tell it all right to your face
‘Cause I need closure
Or blinding faith
I think it over
Think I might stay
I don’t wanna run
Even if I lose my head
Show me you’re the one
And leaving is a losing bet
I’m thinking of my last words
Gotta get ‘em off my chest
It feels like nothing matters
When you look over the edge
As I get closer
I hold my breath
I think it over
And all that’s left
I don’t wanna run
Even if I lose my head
Show me you’re the one
And leaving is a losing bet
It’s never good enough
I shouldn’t have to prove myself
Show me you’re the one
And leaving is a losing bet
