This week, I sat down with the intention of writing a closer for my next album. My working title is Everything We Ever Felt, and while it may not be the case for everyone, I find it extra challenging to write a song with that sort of pressure on it. In my experience, I’ve recognized a song’s ability to serve as an opener, closer, interlude, or whatever, well after it was written. To my surprise (it’s always a surprise, isn’t it?), I happily arrived at something interesting rather quickly, and it’s now inspired me to write with a similar intentionality going forward with the album’s preparation.
As always, thank you for listening, thank you for reading, and thank you to those generously supporting me here with a paid subscription. Here’s a first draft of the tune, played at my dining room table on acoustic guitar. It’s an apocalyptic ballad sung in the arms of a lover as life flashes before your eyes. ◍
