organizing an accident is a once-weekly newsletter where I leak home demos of unreleased songs, first draft lyrics, thoughts on the creative process, and dispatches from music life in Paris.
Listen to “Love Takes It's Time” (demo):
This song was written on May 14, 2021
A lot of the music I’ve shared on this newsletter was in fact written in the Spring of 2021, after the making of my album Soft Power. This is one of those songs. While I always write songs every week, from time to time, I get overenthusiastic and write songs every day, often resulting in decent material because I never really step out of the process.
Each day begins with a slightly more informed approach, warmed up from the work that preceded it. If creativity is indeed a muscle, this makes sense to anyone who has experienced the ameliorating effect of a consistent workout routine, as we sense our body (and mind) becoming stronger and more able.
I've rarely sustained this type of schedule for more than three weeks to a month, but the output continues to bear fruit afterwards as I settle back into a typical routine or indulge other interests. I learned a lot from this particular period in 2021, and today I can experience that collection of songs almost like a fan or an observer. It seems that—the faster the material comes out, the less time I get to "know" it—therefore offering up surprises later. ◍
